Cotton Candy History :

Did you know how this sweet confection first began ? After doing some research we found some sweet facts we decided to share with you.

Cotton candy was very popular in Italy in the 1400's. It was then called spun sugar. The old fashion way to make this was to first melt the sugar then taking a fork pull the sugary liquid out and place it over an upside down bowl or pan. This process when dried form strings which was then served as a dessert.

Due to the length of time this process took it was not made for mass production. William Morrison and John C. Wharton, candy makers created a machine in the late 1800's which was the start of the mass production for cotton candy. With this machine they were able to melt large amounts of sugar and add flavoring and coloring. The sugar liquid was then force through a screen which created sugar strings. These strings were then collected in a large bowl and twirled around a cardboard cone and ready to eat.

Morrison and Wharton then named these sweet treat Fairy Dust and it was sold in boxes at St. Louis World Fair in 1904. It was the hit of the fair, even though it was pricey everyone had to have it. They ended up selling approx. 68,600 boxes. By 1920 in America this sweet treat was now called Cotton candy , although in many parts of the world to this day it is still known as Fairy Dust and Candy Floss.

Though out the years the lengthy process of making this confection had changed. In the 1970's an automatic cotton candy machine was created. This allowed manufacturing to be done on a large scale. This machine could also automatically package it as it went along.

Cotton candy is still one of the number one selling summer time treats. Whether you go to the county fair, zoo, circus or the carnival you are sure to see kids running around with sticky fingers. This is also a treat that adults love to eat.

Just about any store you go into now you will find bags of Cotton candy. The most famous brand is Charms Fluffy Stuff and is manufactured by Tootsie Roll Industries. Not only to they make the traditional fruit flavors, but also a sour flavor. At the holidays you can find Snow Balls, Cotton Tails and Spider Webs.
